A thrill-seeker who hung from the back of two fast-moving trains while shouting 'I'm train-surfing motherf****r' says being jailed was the best thing that happened to him because it cured his addiction to prescription drugs.

Damien Hyland, 24, was arrested in September 2021 after he filmed the stunt and posted it online, telling TV news at the time that he did it because 'there's nothing to do in Perth.'

However, the Youtuber has since revealed to Daily Mail Australia the real reason behind the move was because he was high on a cocktail of benzodiazepine, Xanax, Valium, and alcohol.

The medications are highly addictive and normally prescribed by doctors to alleviate anxiety or severe insomnia. 

It was only when he was jailed and a fellow inmate told him to 'pull your head in' that he turned his life around.

Mr Hyland spiral into addiction began when was given a script for benzodiazepine in 2019 because he couldn't sleep.

By the time he decided to train surf two years later, he had already woken up in hospital multiple times after drug overdoses, his friends were terrified for his life and disowned him, and his family were in a constant state of worry.

His body had built up a tolerance to the medication, which meant he had to take about 20 pills and wash it down with vodka to get the same high he felt when he first started taking drugs.

At one stage, he mixed so many pills with vodka that he woke up in hospital four days later - he had been in a coma on life support, with his father and sister by his bedside.

But it wasn't enough to turn him off drugs for good. Just hours after talking to TV cameras about the train surfing incident, Mr Hyland went out and popped more pills, found himself arrested for disorderly conduct and woke up in a police watch house.

His Legal Aid lawyers did not apply for bail on his behalf, so the magistrate decided to keep him in custody for 17 days - which he says was the best thing that ever happened to him.

Mr Hyland - who grew up as a Jehovah's Witness believing he would be killed if he fraternised with the outside world - described jail as 'the scariest place on Earth' and said the experience was 'a massive eye-opener'.

'I had two-and-a-half weeks where I got sober and I just got talking to some of the blokes and they're like, "what are you doing? I'm here for 20 more years and you're here for two more weeks? Pull your head in".'

One inmate told Mr Hyland he would 'beat the sh*t' out of him if he ever returned to prison. 

He said he doesn't regret his problems with addiction because 'I changed as a person'.

'I realised addiction only ends in two ways - prison or death.'

Mr Hyland was prescribed benzodiazepine in 2019 to treat insomnia, which he believes was the result of stress after a close friend died due to depression.

'I realised the more I took, the higher I felt and it was the first time in my life I had ever felt high,' he said.

'Then I realised if I mix these pills with alcohol I felt even better so I just started taking five six or seven at night and then mixing that with alcohol straight vodka or beer.'

Mr Hyland went back to the same doctor a few times to get more scripts - saying he'd either run out or misplaced them, before he realised he could go to multiple doctors and get multiple prescriptions.

He eventually had so any pills that he was getting high every night, but his life really started to spiral when a friend offered him Xanax.

'I raced up to the city, got money out of the bank and grabbed the Xanax,' he said.

'I didn't even go home, I got back on the train, popped these Xanax and then I was in hospital on my a** with no clue what had happened.'

When he was released from hospital the next day, he went straight back home to grab another pack before heading to work. After work, he took more pills and woke up in the police watch house.

At his lowest point, he was taking 10 Xanax per day - until he woke up in hospital again and was told 'whatever you took last night contained Fentanyl'.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid prescribed to treat severe pain. It is 100 times more potent than morphine and is sometimes mixed with heroin and other recreational drugs, and is a common cause of overdose deaths in Canada and the US.

At that stage, Mr Hyland realised he had an addiction.

'I had a couple of easy days then I woke up one day and, for whatever reason,  thought "nah, stuff it went" completely smashed down a bottle of vodka went into a park and I just sat there and cried and I don't even know why,' he said.

He then got a call from his aunt to say she was going to visit, so he went home and drank half a bottle of vodka and took all the pills he had - mixing Valium, benzodiazepine and Xanax.

'I wake up four days later with my little sister standing next to me and my dad standing next to me and I had come out of a coma and on life support for four days,' he said.

'Now that's where I wish I could sit here and say to you, this needs to come to an end I need to stop taking drugs, but that's not what happened.'

Mr Hyland took a couple of days to recover, before he started taking the pills again.

He decided he wanted 'everyone' to know he was an alcoholic and taking drugs, and came up with the idea of riding on the back of a train and posting the footage on social media.

His friends were upset that he would risk his life like that, but he didn't care.  'I loved it, I loved the risk, I loved the fact I ended up on the news, I loved the fact it annoyed people,' he said.

'I thought, "stuff it, let's take more pills let's drink more".'

Soon after, he was placed in the police watch house.

Mr Hyland has now been sober for about a year-and-a-half and vowed never to touch drugs again.

'I had the thought in jail that "all you have to do is give up the pills and then you don't need to worry about either being dead or in prison", and I went "whoa, maybe I just need to get clean",' he recalled.

'If I drink, I have to be with someone - I do not drink on my own - and I've stuck to those rules and I couldn't be more grateful to the judge.'
